Health-Focused Dentistry Beyond Traditional Treatment

Understanding Guided Open Wound Healing (GOWH®) and the ARENA-Protocol®

Successful treatment does not begin in the dental chair - it begins with understanding the body's natural healing processes.

In our certified centers, dentists and oral surgeons work according to a specially developed surgical concept based on modern research and health-focused healing principles. The goal is not only to treat a condition, but to actively support your body's natural healing processes.

At the core of modern health oriented dental care is an understanding that healing after tooth extraction, bone loss, and surgical intervention is not merely the closing of a wound, but a complex biological process. Traditional concepts of wound healing focus on simply covering a surgical site. In contrast, the Guided Open Wound Healing (GOWH®) approach seeks to guide the body's own biological mechanisms to promote predictable and stable regeneration.

Building on this, the ARENA-Protocol® (Alveolar Ridge Enhancement via Epithelialization following Augmentation) is a structured, health guided surgical concept developed by Professor Shahram Ghanaati. It is designed to support healthy bone healing by restoring physiological conditions within the jaw after extractions or other surgical treatments.

The Six Key Elements of Our Health-Focused Approach

Within the ARENA-Protocol® and GOWH® philosophy, healing is supported by attention to multiple interconnected factors - not just surgical technique. These six elements help translate biological insight into practice:

1. Radiological Assessment
High-resolution imaging is used before treatment to identify areas of concern and plan precisely.

2. Nutritional and Vitamin Balance
A well-balanced intake of essential micronutrients and vitamins supports normal metabolism and cellular function during healing.

3. Hydration
Adequate fluid balance supports microcirculation and cellular processes essential for tissue regeneration.

4. Decortication and Biological Activation
Specific surgical techniques are used to expose healthy, well-vascularized bone and remove areas that may impede natural healing.

5. Use of Bone Substitutes and Blood Concentrates
Carefully selected biomaterials and patient-derived biologics (such as blood concentrates) help guide osteogenesis, angiogenesis, and epithelialization.

6. Patient's Systemic Condition
Overall health - including chronic conditions, metabolism, and immune status - is considered because healing is influenced by the whole body, not just the surgical site.

What This Means for You

Our goal is to support your body's natural ability to heal. We focus not only on precise surgical care, but also on the foundations of true recovery - nutrition, hydration, microbial balance, and your overall systemic health.

Every person heals differently. Your dentist or oral surgeon will carefully evaluate your medical history, individual needs, and healing capacity, and may recommend supportive measures tailored specifically to you.

Understanding Tooth-Body Connections

Your mouth is not separate from the rest of your body.

Teeth, gums, nerves, blood vessels, and immune responses are all part of a connected system. What happens in the oral cavity can influence overall health — and your general health can also affect how your mouth heals and responds.

Chronic inflammation or hidden infection in the jaw does not always stay “local”. In some cases, it may contribute to systemic stress or inflammatory burden. At the same time, conditions such as autoimmune disorders, metabolic imbalance, or chronic illness can affect oral tissues and healing capacity.

This does not mean that every tooth is directly linked to a specific organ in a simple one-to-one way. The body is far more complex than that.

Instead, we recognize that biological systems interact continuously — through immune signaling, circulation, and neural pathways.

At Ghanaati-Education, this understanding supports a more thoughtful approach to diagnostics and treatment. Advanced 3D imaging and biologically guided surgical principles help clinicians evaluate oral conditions within the broader context of the whole body.

Our goal is clarity and precision — addressing oral health in a way that supports long-term systemic stability and regenerative capacity.

Care Provided in Certified Centers

In our Certified Centers, treatment is designed around how the body naturally heals. Dental conditions are not viewed in isolation, but as part of overall systemic health.

This approach includes Guided Open Wound Healing (GOWH®) and the ARENA-Protocol® - structured surgical and biological concepts that prioritize tissue preservation, regenerative principles, and stable long-term outcomes.

Clinicians practicing in Certified Centers have completed advanced training through Ghanaati-Education and follow clearly defined standards that integrate surgical precision with an understanding of healing biology.

Clinicians in certified centers are trained not only in advanced surgical techniques, but also in:

  • Protecting and preserving healthy tissue
  • Supporting natural bone and tissue regeneration
  • Evaluating systemic factors that may affect healing
  • Integrating supportive measures into patient care

Treatment planning therefore considers not only the local dental situation, but also factors that may influence healing, regeneration, and long-term stability.

The Role of Probiotics and Nutrients in Oral Healing & Regeneration

In our treatment philosophy, particular attention is given to maintaining balance within the oral ecosystem and supporting the body's natural regenerative capacity. This approach is reflected in key principles such as nutritional and vitamin balance, which plays an important role in how tissues recover after dental treatment.

The mouth is home to a complex ecosystem of beneficial and potentially harmful bacteria. Before and after surgical procedures, maintaining a balanced oral microbiome can be an important factor in supporting tissue recovery. Specific oral probiotics may help to support a healthy microbial balance, to reduce the presence of unwanted bacteria and assist in maintaining healthy gums and tissues.
Healing requires energy, cellular repair, and proper immune responses. Certain vitamins, minerals, and biological compounds are involved in these processes. Targeted nutrition support may help to support normal wound healing, it contributes to collagen formation, assists immune system function and supports bone and soft tissue health.

These supportive measures are considered within a broader, health-focused treatment framework known as the ARENA-Protocol®.

Supportive Product Solutions within a Health-Focused Concept

Based on modern understanding of oral biology and regenerative processes, certain supportive products may be considered as part of a comprehensive treatment approach.

The formulations presented here were co-developed with Professor Ghanaati and are designed to complement health-focused dental care concepts. Their purpose is to support conditions that are relevant during healing phases - particularly those related to microbial balance, nutrient availability, and bone and tissue metabolism.

These products are not stand-alone solutions. They are integrated into structured care concepts such as the ARENA-Protocol®, where local treatment, systemic factors, and biological healing mechanisms are viewed together.

Not every patient requires the same supportive measures. The products presented here may be considered depending on the type of procedure, healing progress, and overall treatment goals.

In individual cases, additional measures may also be necessary. A patient's personal constitution, medical history, existing conditions, and current health status can all influence healing capacity and nutritional needs. For this reason, recommendations are always tailored to the individual and may include further supportive strategies beyond those presented here.

All decisions are made in consultation with your dentist or healthcare professional as part of a comprehensive, biologically guided care concept.

Support Before, During, and After Treatment

Within health-focused treatment concepts such as GOWH® and the ARENA-Protocol®, healing is understood as a process that extends beyond the surgical moment.

The body's regenerative capacity is influenced by biological conditions that develop over time. For this reason, supportive measures may be considered not only after a procedure, but also in the preparation phase and throughout the recovery period.

Depending on individual needs, supportive products may be recommended:
  • Before treatment, to help prepare the biological environment
  • During the treatment phase, to support ongoing physiological processes
  • After treatment, while tissue regeneration and adaption continue

This time-oriented approach reflects the understanding that healing is not an isolated event, but a guided physiological process.
